Well, not just about Benchy, but us who are creating these marvelous tortures to put him though. We are the Emerging Technology Team at the University of Oklahoma. We are working to see what exactly happens to Benchy when he is exposed to a multitude of different environments, as well as seeing how his materials will react (as we will be making a multitude of Benchys out of a multitude of materials.
Benchy is also a common 3D print as it has all the right angles and structures in order to test whether a 3D printer is working properly. Our students who work with the printers in our makerspace tend to use Benchy as a test after fixing a printer that has had some issues; thus, the excess of Benchys floating around the office as well as our makerspace.
